The ever-changing requirements of the heavy-duty construction industry often demands massive power and fuel efficiency at the same time. The growing emissions requirements enacted by the EPA has forced companies like Caterpillar to make technological advances in engines. One of the best technological innovations in recent years is the Caterpillar engine, also known as “CAT engine”, or “CTP engine”.

Caterpillar Engine History

Let’s take a look back at Caterpillar engine history. The CAT 3304 and 3306 remain two of the best engines Caterpillar ever designed and produced. While the former is an in-line, four-stroke-cycle engine that has a max brake horsepower of 95, a bore and stroke of 4.8 inches by 6.0 inches and a displacement of 425 cubic inches, the latter is a 10.5 L inline six-cylinder diesel or natural gas engine that produces horsepower ratings between 218 – 360 hp with turbo and injector performance upgrades. Both engines are known for their reliability due to uncomplicated designs, yet offer solutions in a wide range of construction applications. These engines were installed in a lot of vocational trucks, step vans, delivery vehicles, and bread trucks. The engines are also found in everything from rollers, excavators to cement mixers.

Caterpillar Cylinder Heads

Many special features make Caterpillar engines exceptional, yet one thing that sets Caterpillar apart is its cylinder head design. Performing the same function as regular cylinder heads, which are sealing in the pressures of combustion, circulating coolant to maintain proper operating temperatures, and providing superior compression resistance, Caterpillar cylinder heads and valves are built with high-quality materials and controlled manufacturing processes to provide top performance and long life. Each cylinder head is assembled and cleaned to meet rigid requirements, and also totally inspected to detect possibilities of failure. To avoid cracking, castings are checked for erosion or other damage, and internal coolant passages vital to proper water circulation are also ensured to meet Caterpillar specifications. Caterpillar’s strict re-manufacturing process for cylinder heads and valves allow its engines to go hundreds of thousands of miles. (before major overhaul)
