The high-tech and high-performance mid-sized Chevrolet Colorado

A trip through its brief history

The Chevy Colorado first arrived in 2004 when it replaced the S-10 as the manufacturers mid-sized pickup truck. GMC produces a nearly identical truck called the Canyon, which replaced the also similar S-15 / Sonoma. Isuzu also produced the I-series, which was designed in cooperation with General Motors, but failed to sell strongly across North America.

This article will focus on the Chevy Colorado…and cylinder head replacement options for the Colorado truck. The Colorado had numerous different engine options throughout its 1st generation tenure, which lasted from 2004 – 2012. In 2004 the Colorado was introduced with a turbocharged 2.5 Liter inline 4 engine and by the time it’s generation was done, the truck offered a 5.3 Liter V8 engine as consumers were looking for more power and greater usage capabilities. Several versions of the inline 4 have been offered for the truck’s entire existence. Along with this are 3 different inline 5 engines that have spanned the trucks first 8 years of production and from 2009 – 2012 there were two versions of a 5.3 Liter V8 engine offered.

After a short wait, the 2nd generation has not disappointed

After a 2 year U.S. market hiatus, the Colorado truck returned in 2014 to U.S. dealerships. The 2nd generation initially offered and improved 2.5 Liter Ecotec inline 4 engine and a 3.6 Liter V6 engine, which has a greater power output than the previous generations 5.3 Liter V8. On top of greater power output, the new Colorado also boosted its gas mileage and now all of its engine options are rated at 25 miles per gallon (mpg) or greater. In 2016 Chevrolet released its turbocharged 2.8 Liter Duramax leader which has best in class fuel mileage at 30 mpg on the highway. It also has increased tow capabilities, now being rated up to 7,700 pounds of tow capacity with 369 ft/lb of torque to make that haul even easier.

Chevy Colorado Off-Roading

Off-roading has been around since the start of automobiles and seems to get more and more popular every year. Chevy accommodated this popularity by putting together an off-road package for their 2nd generation Colorado. Some new options that are available to improve the consumers off-roading experience include:

  • Improved ground clearance
  • Upgraded suspension
  • Automatic locking rear differential, and
  • A skid plate.

2020 Accolades

2020 has been a milestone year for the Chevy Colorado as it was Awarded the Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com Best Buy Award for mid-sized trucks. It was also the Popular Mechanics Editor’s Choice Best Off-Roader stating that the Colorado ZR2 could “do it all”.
