Ford Marine Engines

Throughout the years, there have been many different engines of varying power that have graced the markets. Engines for cars, airplanes, and boats have been manufactured and used by millions. Sometimes engines can be a deciding factor for someone looking for a car or even overlooked by those who may not understand what the different types are and how powerful they can be.

Ford engines have become more recognizable over the years and even sought out by informed buyers. In addition to their well-known car and truck engines, Ford has their hand in manufacturing boat / marine engines. And Ford has come to garner a reputation of being both dependable and strong in the marine market.

Difference Between Boat and Car Engines

You may be wondering what’s stopping you from replacing your boat engine with a car engine. Your car engine may be cheaper, so why not? There are actually key differences between the two which makes it easy to see why they have to be two different engines.

  • Marine Engines are Built to Withstand Corrosion
    • Since marine engines are used directly on the water, they need to be built to withstand the moisture and the salt that comes with that environment and could cause corrosion and rusting of the engine. It makes sense that boat engines are made to withstand wet conditions, unlike a car engine which is built on the assumption that the car will be in a much drier environment.
  • Marine Engines are Stronger
    • Because of the consistent resistance the water provides, marine engines are built to be stronger than a car engine. The power behind a marine engine always needs to be at full throttle. A key difference between the way a marine engine and a car engine are built is the number of gears they have. While a car has four gears to cycle through to keep it at an appropriate speed on the road, a marine engine only has one gear to keep it at the constant full throttle that it needs to cut through the water.
  • Different Engine Components
    • The marine engine has a different alternator, distributor, and starter from a car engine. Marine engines also have special screens that snuff out sparks to ensure nothing alights.

Ford Marine / Boat Engines

Ford left the marine engine market for 20 years, and it wasn’t until 2013 that they jumped back into it. Ford partnered with marine engine giant Indmar Marine Engines to create a few engines that are built “Ford Tough.” They created the:

  • 400 6.2L Ford Raptor
  • 450 6.2L Ford Raptor
  • 575 6.2L Ford ROUSHcharged Raptor

These boat engines are built for power, and Ford wants you to feel it when you take them into the water. They emphasized that these engines are perfect for watersports with the best torque on the market. If you have an older Ford marine engine, it may not be necessary to upgrade to a new engine. Obviously, you will need to consult with your boat mechanic.
